TNF-α is a cytokine that binds to TNFR-55 and TNFR-75 receptors which are expressed on all somatic cells. It is derived from several types of cells but especially by activated monocytes and can induce cell death of certain tumor cell lines. It is a potent pyrogen causing fever by direct action or by stimulation of interleukin-1 secretion and is implicated in the induction of cachexia. Under certain conditions it can stimulate cell proliferation and induce cell differentiation.
